From Oktay Ekinci’s presentation on "Culture and conservation"

Culture and conservation are "contemporary" concepts:??

There was no concern for protecting the built environment before Enlightment.

Bodrum Citadel was built with the stones of Mausoleum.??

Fatih Mosque was built on Byzantine Church

Sultan Ahmet Mosque was built over Byzantine Palace

Mimar Sinan used columns from ancient period cities in Anatolia.

This was normal and even desired to show the New Rule.??

Only exceptions of conservation in the period before enlightment could be listed as some temples, sanctuaries etc. They were preserved with FEAR-CURSE etc, but not for a concern for conservation.??

and some Palaces were conserved as they were the houses of representatives of GOD in the world. ?? ????

Unfortunately no civil architecture is preserved: housing architecture of those periods are hard to find

Victor Hugo, as a humanist, was among a group of French parliements who developed a law on preservation of cultural heritage in 1835-53. ??
